2011 Recap

Here’s the last blog for the year. Was your year awesome? Is your holiday going well?!

I hope so!

As promised, here’s the 2011 recap. I’ll do my best to make this flow. Some of the time boundaries are a little gray. :-)

Apologies in advance if I forgot anything or anyone

I started off 2011 as someone that, in the previous 2 years, went from losing his day job to being a college graduate to still not being able to find a new job. By January, I had already started giving guitar lessons on the side to stay afloat and had committed myself to spending the year proving that either music would or wouldn’t work out as a career...

Plus, I was going into new territory with this whole ‘blog’ thing.

On Chemcoma’s end, things were looking up. We were still celebrating our 5-year anniversary, released “Something to Die for” (and its accompanying video), and kept playing shows. The 5-year buzz wore off, though, and we ended up playing our final show around the beginning of July. For the record, we’re all still friends and chat on occasion. So, hopefully the break-up buzz wore off too!

Before the Chemcoma break, I had already launched the IND project on the side in an effort to put food in the dogs’ bowls. I managed to design and launch ChrisJuneIND.com (regardless of the quality, it’s my first site & I’m proud of doing it) and finished up the writing/recording/mixing/mastering of “Settling.” By March, some cell camera/iMovie experimenting led to the upload of the “Settling” video.

I followed that up with the re-tweaking of my song “Dear Reason” and its release/video in May and continued testing out playing shows by myself. The singer/songwriter/unplugged format isn’t my ‘thing’ or strength, but I chose to play in some capacity instead of not at all. Since I was used to playing to a click while recording and performing live, I built accompanying piano tracks and jammed tunes at open mics and as an opening act for other regional bands. I was even given the opportunity to play at a benefit for the Home with Hope!

This process has helped me in overcoming some vocal and interaction inhibitions and paved the way for sponsorships (Artisan Electric, DropYa Fightwear, ISPhotographic, Lafayette Speaker Repair, People’s Brewing Co., Rhodes Amplification, Sacred Apple, Sound Logic Recording, and Willow Stained Glass).

Some good local press came my way too!

While the unplugged gigs were (and still are) a lot of fun, the side of me that wanted to sling the Tele low & crank my amp was getting ignored. After finishing up my 'annual volunteering' for the Tippecanoe Arts Federation (with a successful, off-the-hook Taste of Tippecanoe), I found Chris Parker and Drew Luigs between July and August and got them on board.

It should be noted that it was quite a surprise to be able to put those pieces in place so quickly. While Lafayette is an insanely talented town, the free agent market is a bit dry. Most dudes are already locked up in other bands. Also, kudos to Dinger (from The Mound Builders) for making himself available and jamming with me during that time. It was a confidence boost knowing that I’d be able to move ‘the rock’ forward in some capacity. You = the man.

While Chris, Drew, and I started putting together the 2011 Fall shows, I was wrapping up the recording of Whistle When We Break Down. Because the band-side was going well, I got a little more ambitious. Instead of doing another indie/in-house release, I pulled the trigger on getting those tracks to Grant Mohrman (Method House Studios) for mixing. Grant and I have a 10+ year relationship (no homo) and that cat makes my tunes go boom. His work, in my opinion, has been crucial to any success I’ve had in the past; radio, licensing, etc.

As Grant was mixing the EP in Detroit, my buddy Chris Voglund helped me get some side work running sound at local shows; leading to volunteer work for the Food Finders/Feeding America’s Zombaid benefit too.

As mixing wrapped, Chris June IND went loud and live with an opening night that saw us headlining both HomegrownBiker.com’s Monster Halloween Party and LafayetteMetal.com’s Halloween Show. The boys started jamming open mics with me, which led to a stripped-down set at the Knickerbocker for my birthday.
With the Method House touch on Whistle When We Break Down and hard copies in my hand, I assembled a merch display to push CDs and shirts at shows; even selling them out of my trunk and delivering across town (and the state) when necessary.

Jon Delange at Tinderbox Music got busy by executing the plan to push the envelope even more; getting the tracks on college radio playlists nation-wide and into the hands of some big television network music coordinators. Some of the tunes were starting to get some spins on other indie and internet stations too. Even more online push resulted when I launched the indie video for “Out of Our Hands” earlier this month!

Finally, before Christmas, I squeezed in some production work for the dudes in Arch Drive Goodbye for their holiday track, “Ghost of Christmas Past.”

2011 began with me being a singing guitarist in a semi-successful regional band, striving to be the best husband and pops to the pups, and doing everything possible to be a good mentor to my guitar students and my little brothers (btw, the USMC got Jordan to and from Afghanistan safely and Joey graduated high school, started college, and is continuing his musical journey).

I’m wrapping up the year as a solo artist and an amateur web designer, graphic designer, videographer, blogger, producer, recording/mixing/sound engineer, etc. I’ve been able to volunteer for great local causes and my music is sponsored by 9 great Indiana Small businesses. Also, this blog has gone from averaging 6-8 views to as much as 200 per month, my videos have surpassed 1500 views, and the Fan Page ‘likes’ continue to grow too. So, here’s to doubling that for next year!

So, 2012 me, you’re on notice: you better kick 2011 me’s ass, dude.

Thanks to my family, the IND crew, friends, my students, their parents, all contributors to the Lafayette scene, Grant, and Jon.

This would’ve been hard to pull off without your help.

Last, but not least, thanks to you for stopping by every week!

Whether you check this out to gather the scene scoop, get ideas to help push your music, or to casually see what I’m up to, I’m glad you’re involved.

If you’re not doing so already, please use the recap as motivation to catch more local shows, buy more local music, and volunteer for local causes. As a good friend says, "We all come up together."

Let’s have an awesome 2012!!!

PS: Kudos to Born Under Burden, Echovox, The Enders, Lorenguard, Mike Reeb, Snorb!, and The Mound Builders for putting out awesome CDs this year. I’m looking forward to new stuff from you, 9LB Gun, 50/6 Feet, Arch Drive Goodbye, Go Go Gadget Gonads, the Heavy Company, the Shake Ups, and the other Lafayette Music dudes!!!

12/19/11

Hey all! Apologies for sacrificing the blog last week. I had more things on the 'to do' list than I could pull off.

The funny thing is, last week was the 1 year anniversary of my first 'test, test' blog post.

So, let's chat about what happened...

The "Out of Our Hands" video is done!

The goal for this one was to be a lot more frantic than the others. With the split-screen action & clips rotating every 2 seconds, I think that part was a success.

Theme-wise, the video is a lot like a normal day for me; cut with performance shots of singing and playing guitar. It shows most things I do to be able to go out and jam at night: It's not the glamorous 'drinking & playing guitar all day' situation. Well, at least not for this guy...

Kudos to those who have 'liked' it, left comments, & shared it through your personal pages. It means a lot to me!!!

PS: For my Spotify-using readers, you can stream the Whistle When We Break Down jams HERE.

Moving on...

I got out and jammed twice last week!

First, Wednesday night at Lafayette Live was a blast. I'm hip to share the stage with Evan Ryan, Hillary Tribbett, and Lindsey Sickler anytime!

Drew's ok too. :-)

It's a lot more fun when he plays the tunes with me.

Here's the set:

"Pocket and Soul"
"Before it Gets to Me"
"Bed Intruder" - Auto-tune the News cover
"Out of Our Hands"

Thursday night I rolled-solo to Jason Wells' Open Mic at Applebee's in Frankfort.

Here's the set:

"Pocket and Soul"
"My Rx"
"Before it Gets to Me"
"Settling"
"Out of Our Hands"
---------
"Something Else is Something More"
"Dear Reason"
"Faithfully" - Journey cover

I joined Mr. Wells on Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" and several blues-y jams too!

Saturday, I got the IND gang together. We've been busy picking up new tunes for the 2012 shows.

After wrapping up, I stopped by my little bro's show to catch him pummel the crowd with the Thor crew. Churches and All-Ages shows typically aren't my bag, but I couldn't miss it. Those dudes have a crazy amount of talent and Joey's got pipes...

On Sunday I helped out my buddies in Arch Drive Goodbye with a holiday tune they're doing. I haven't gotten into a lot of programming recently, so it was fun to bust some of that out. It's like R. Kelly without the pee... maybe a little whiter too.

Also, those dudes are putting me on the payroll for their new CD project for early 2012. It should be a lot of fun!

Thanks for stopping by! I'm off to tie-up some loose biz ends so I can keep learning new IND tunes, wrap up 2011 accounting(tax time is around the corner), and get started on the 2011 blog recap.

Have a great week!!

12/5/11

December is here already. Looks like I'll need to get working on the 2011 recap soon.

It'll be a novel...

Until that happens, how about some of the usual?

First, I'd like to start by wishing both of my little bros a happy birthday. It's odd how they managed to be born on consecutive days (but years apart). It sucks that Jordan is celebrating his 21st in Afghanistan, but I'm sure his USMC buds are making it worthwhile. Luckily, he'll be home this month. No doubt that Joey, 19, will be celebrating for a couple of weeks: he'll be throwing it down fronting Thor on December 17th.

I spent most of last week running and peddling Whistle When We Break Down CDs, working on the "Out of Our Hands" video, and doing some updates to ChrisJuneIND.com.

Outside of that...

Tuesday was the radio add date for Whistle When We Break Down on 300 college radio stations. Initially I thought it was a national campaign, but there turned out to be some stations in Canada too. Again, I'll spill the beans on radio reports/charting as the info come in. Kudos to Tinderbox Music for getting on board and making this happen!

If you're interested in seeing the station list, I'll post the it at the end of the blog. If you have friends and family or know students in these markets and tip them off, I certainly appreciate it!!

I stopped in at Sacred Apple on Wednesday to get more ink in my left arm. It's healing up nicely. Thanks to them for being an IND sponsor & taking care of me. I'm looking forward to sporting their new shirt & my new work at shows.

I barely made it to catch the end of the Frankfort Applebee's Open Mic on Thursday. There were several new faces/acts in attendance. I'm glad it's starting to pick up. Jason Wells is doing some good work over there.

The Jurassic Park Pop Fest went down at the Lafayette Theater on Saturday afternoon. My bro & I stopped in to see Why I Like Robins' set, but it turns out they got bumped from the bill. That was a bummer, but I was entertained by other acts (wishing I'd have taken notes on what their names were).

Coming up this week:

Between administrative work, IND practice, and guitar lessons, I'll be hanging at Lafayette Live at the Lafayette Theater on Wednesday night & running sound at Black Sparrow on Friday night. I'll most definitely have CDs on me.

Also, IND drummer Chris Parker will be filling in for our buds in The Enders for their shows in Lafayette at Foam City on 12/9 and Indianapolis at Indy's Jukebox on 12/10. If you're hip to aggressive/punk/hardcore-ish tunes, make stops at their shows!

That does it for the weekly update. Thanks for stopping by!

As always, to get mini-updates between blogs, catch me on Twitter: @ChrisJuneIND and Facebook: Listn.to/ChrisJuneIND.

Have a great week!!

11/28/11

I hope everyone had an awesome holiday weekend!

Before I headed to my home turf in Southern Indiana for turkey, I lent a hand with sound for the Moonshine Mason and the Rot Gut Gang and Afro-Disiacs show at the Knickerbocker last Wednesday night. As is the norm in downtown Lafayette, the show was full of great performances and music!

In IND news...

I lucked out & the FedEx fairy delivered the Whistle When We Break Down CDs last week!! There are 9 tracks total (3 versions each of "Guilt that Keeps on Giving," "Out of Our Hands," and "Pocket and Soul") written/performed/recorded by this guy at IND HQ in Lafayette, IN and mixed by Grant Mohrman at Method House Studios in Detroit, MI. The art features a lyric sheet and a lengthy 'thanks list'. Perhaps you're in there...

I only did a short run. So, if you like to hold your music in your hands, grab it from me for $5 before they're gone. Hit me up via the Contact or the Fan Page to arrange a swap. Also, if you follow me on Twitter, I'll mention when I leave the studio with them.

If you missed it last week, The Journal & Courier had some nice things to say about the songs...

As a reminder: the main versions of the songs are still available for digital download for $.99 each on iTunes and Amazon. You can also preview & buy for $1 per track on my Bandcamp Page. In addition to the Fan Page, you can now stream the tunes on Spotify too.

Speaking of jamming the CD, I'm pretty excited for tomorrow!

Yes, Tuesday, Nov 29th is the 'Add Date' for Whistle When We Break Down on college radio. My buddies at Tinderbox Music are jazzed about the tunes and are working with me to push them nationwide. My fingers are crossed that stations pick it up. If so, I'll spill the beans on chart positions, etc. as the info comes in.

There's the weekly update.

I'm off to take care of some booking & to get some work done on the "Out of Our Hands" video.

Thanks for stopping by!!!

11/21/11

I've been pounding coffee and losing sleep for a couple of days while shooting the new video for "Out of Our Hands."

But... since it's blog day, I'm taking a short break from that.

Some coolness happened over the week. Tim Brouk at the Journal & Courier said some cool words about my new jams. You can check the article out HERE (at JConline.com).

Thanks Tim!

Also, remember way back (July, I think) when I mentioned something about going to the WBAA studio to chat & play some songs for the Local Music Show?

Well, the podcast is up! <--Follow the link to listen

It's fun to look back on. Sure, there are mistakes/bugs and things I'd say differently now, but such is life... and such is rock 'n roll. :-)

Thanks Bitsy & Shea!

Now, onto last week's recap:

I got out to catch some sweet sets by Joe Peters, Hillary Tribbett, Nick Berkshire, etc. at Lafayette Live on Wednesday night. As always, it was good times & great tunes.

Thursday I went over to the Applebee's Open Mic in Frankfort to hang with Jason Wells and jam a little.

Here's the set:

"Dear Reason"
"Settling"
"My Rx"
"Pocket and Soul"
"Before it Gets to Me"
"Nutshell" - Alice in Chains cover

I should mention that my wing man, Clayton Smith, took lead on the last song. If you're unfamiliar, Clayton and I founded the band Adrenaline back in '98 & caused trouble with the group until around '03. Since Thursday night's shindig coincided with his trip 'back home' from his new stomping grounds out West, we decided to spend a couple of nights practicing via internet & share the stage like old times.

The post-show debauchery was both a blast and NSFB (Not Safe For Blogging). Sorry to leave you hanging. You should hang out more. :-)

The fun continued on Friday night when I lent a hand with sound duties for a stacked bill at the Knickerbocker. Dirty Rotten Sunshine, The Vallures, Green Room Rockers, and The Half Rats had the place packed & moving. Great bands make running sound simple! Great show, dudes!!

Now for more shameless self promo:

If you have any holiday commuting to do this week, I strongly recommend picking up Whistle When We Break Down for the trip. It can be had for $.99 per song on iTunes or Amazon ($2.97 total) or for $1 per song at Bandcamp ($3 total). It's a steal!!!

Disclaimer: be careful with "Guilt that Keeps on Giving," it'll make you drive fast.

Speaking of fast, I gotta cut it short & get back to biz.

Thanks for stopping by, I'm off to do more work on the new video.

Have a happy Thanksgiving!!

11/14/11

I had a blast last week; celebrating Veterans Day, my birthday, and playing 3 shows.

I'm still a little slow from all the happenings. Here's the recap:

As always, Wednesday nights are for Lafayette Live and Drew joined me in some stage-stompin'.

Here's the set:

"Dear Reason"
"Something Else is Something More" - Adrenaline cover
"Before it Gets to Me"
"Pocket and Soul"

The goal was to try and get some 'live time' introducing some different tunes/arrangements to the set to try to get good vibes. This continued in Frankfort on Thursday night for the Open Mic at Applebee's.

Here's the set:

"Dear Reason"
"Something Else is Something More" - Adrenaline cover
"My Rx"
"Pocket and Soul"
"Before it Gets to Me"

Since the open mic formats tend to be a little laid-back, I got up & jammed on some fun covers by John R. Butler, Bloodhound Gang, Cee Lo Green, NWA, Chef, & Lonely Island later in the night too.

Sidenote: I know some of my music buddies are reading this every week, you dudes should check out the open mic links & try to make it out to jam!

After a month+ of organizing & promoting, the Veterans Day show at the Knickerbocker went off without a hitch. Attendance was awesome and my bros Jason Wells & 9LB Gun threw it down.

On my end, it was great to have Chris & Drew with me on stage again. If it was the dirtiest and meanest we could be unplugged, then mission accomplished.

Here's the set:

"Dear Reason"
"Something Else is Something More" - Adrenaline cover
"My Rx"
"Feed Me a Lie"
"Settling"
"Before it Gets to Me"
"Pocket and Soul"
"The Shadow I Will Leave"
"Guilt that Keeps on Giving"
"Bed Intruder" - Auto-Tune the News cover
"Out of Our Hands"

By the way, I'm in the process of collecting video & pics from last week to get up on YouTube & the Fan Page. If you have it, I want it. Shoot me a message.

After a little recovery time, I got out to catch some shows on Saturday night. First up was coffee & chill music by Evan Ryan & Arch Drive Goodbye at Java Roaster. I'm big fans of these dudes' songwriting. My fingers are crossed that I can share a bill with them soon.

After they wrapped up, I ran around the corner to catch Echovox & Why I Like Robins at Black Sparrow. I've known some of the Echovox dudes for quite a few years, but this my first time hearing their new tunes. It's earworm city!

I'm very happy for Bart, Scott, & Jonny for what they have going on. It won't be long before I have their CD worn out, for sure!

Also, Why I Like Robins is my favorite rock band in town. It should be a crime to miss their shows...

That does it for the weekly update.

Kudos to everyone involved in making this week a success! It made for a great birthday present!!

I'm off to hit it hard promoting Whistle When We Break Down, getting ready for the "Out of Our Hands" video, and lining-up more shows.

Thanks for stopping by! I'll have some really cool things to drop on you over the next couple of weeks, so don't be strangers...

Happy Fall Back on DST! I've been feeling extra productive being up an hour earlier...

Last week was a whirlwind of art & biz. Unfortunately, I ended up skipping out on some sweet shows: Evan Ryan at Java Roaster and Snorb! at LBC. On the other hand, I did make it out to catch Lafayette Live and jam at an open mic in Frankfort.

Drew tagged to Frankfort with me and jammed on some original tunes. Later on, I ended up playing some covers too. Here's the set:

"Settling"
"Before it Gets to Me"
"Pocket and Soul"
"Faithfully" - Journey cover
"Long Day" - Matchbox Twenty cover
"Zzyzx Rd" - Stone Sour cover

Thanks to Jason Wells for putting the Frankfort Open Mics! I look forward to stopping in again this week. If you're in the area, it's at Applebee's on SR28 in Frankfort from 8-11pm on Thursday.

Speaking of Jason Wells, we'll be joining forces with him & our buddies in 9LB Gun to fill the Knickerbocker with good tunes on Friday night (11/11/11) at 9pm. In celebration of Veterans Day and to give thanks, a military ID gets you in free. Check out the Event Page for more info and to RSVP.

Did you get the word last week?

The Whistle When We Break Down EP has landed at iTunes and Amazon. I'm super jazzed about the feedback! The digital release features 3 tracks ("Guilt that Keeps on Giving," "Out of Our Hands," and "Pocket and Soul") recorded at IND HQ here in Lafayette and mixed by Grant Mohrman at Method House Studios in Detroit. I've had the first track on the Facebook Fan Page for a few weeks and added the other 2 last night. It's still 'like' for listen, but I think it's worth it. :-)

Go check them out and if you dig them and/or support the IND cause, I'd love for you to own them.

3 songs for less than $3 is a pretty sweet deal, you know...

That does it for the weekly update. Thanks for stopping by! Hopefully I'll see you at the shows this week!!

Don't forget to go vote tomorrow (Tuesday, 11/8/11).

10/31/11

Happy Halloween!

I'm already feeling Halloween-ed-out from celebrating it for almost a week...

First, apologies for having to reschedule the show that was supposed to happen last Monday at Nate's House. I'll let you know when we get a new date on that.

Drew & I stopped in at Lafayette Live on Wednesday night to jam a few tunes. Here's the set:

"Settling"
"Before it Gets to Me"
"Pocket and Soul"

We were excited to be sandwiched between Little Boxes, Hillary Tribbett, and Evan Ryan (where are you online?) for the night. Great sets, dudes!

Friday night I helped run sound at the 2nd annual ZombAid show; benefiting Food Finders / Feeding America. The stage was set up in the middle of Main St. between 2nd & 3rd in front of Black Sparrow and IT WAS ROCKING! Despite the cold temps, Why I like Robins, Dino DNA, & Broken Light had peeps (dressed as zombies, of course) dancing all night. Kudos to the dude in the Wilfred costume. That gave me a good chuckle!!

Saturday turned into a rock n' roll endurance run...

While warming up early in the day for (what was supposed to be) our first club show that night, we got a call to fill in at HomeGrownBikerTV's Monster Halloween Party at Eagle Harley-Davidson. Hybrid Glitch got things warmed up nicely (pun intended: this was an outdoor show & it was chilly).

Here's the set:

"Stuck" - Adrenaline cover
"Feed Me a Lie"
"A Veil Lifted"
"The Shadow I Will Leave"
"Settling"
"Dear Reason"
"Guilt that Keeps on Giving"
"Pocket and Soul"
"Out of Our Hands"

Big thanks to Doug & Scott for taking care of us. I'm down for helping out whenever I can!

Apologies to the lady in the port-a-potty that I exposed to the crowd prior to playing. I'm guessing she'll either never use one again or never forget to lock the door. :-)

After powering down, we hurried up & packed/loaded to head to LafayetteMetal's shindig at Jerilee's. The great tune-age of Our Albatross and Colasi's Omen (along with costume and scream queen contests) made for an awesome time as we got ready for round 2.

Here's the set:

"Stuck" - Adrenaline cover
"Feed Me a Lie"
"A Veil Lifted"
"The Shadow I Will Leave"
"Settling"
"Dear Reason"
"Before it Gets to Me"
"Guilt that Keeps on Giving"
"Pocket and Soul"
"Out of Our Hands"

Thanks to all that came out for 'Opening Night,' especially Chris & Drew. It couldn't have happened without those dudes! I don't think any of us expected to close two shows on our first night out... or for things to go as well as they did.

We're switching gears to prep for the Veteran's Day show at the Knickerbocker with Jason Wells and 9LB Gun. To show our support for the troops, anyone with a military ID gets in free. Also, since this show is on November 11th, my birthday antics will start at midnight. LOOK OUT!!

Before I go, I'll let you know that all of the masters for the Whistle When We Break Down EP got back over the weekend & it should go live on iTunes this week. I'll give the heads up on the Fan Page or @ChrisJuneIND when it's up.

Now, don't eat too much candy! I'll catch you back here next week.

10/24/11

Hey, the blog surpassed 1,000 views last week! Wait, there's no award for that? Oh well...

Remember, if there's content that you're not seeing on the blog that you'd like covered, let me know.

Ready for last week's breakdown? Here we go...

On Tuesday I helped run sound at Black Sparrow for the Psychic Twin, Love of Everything, and Common Loon show. Not one of these bands had more than 2 people and all sounded huge! I was especially digging on the electronic elements of Psychic Twin & Common Loon. Overall, it was an awesome show!

I made my regular stop at Lafayette Live on Wednesday night. There wasn't anything crazy to report, but it was fun and, if you're reading this, you should start checking it out. :-)

I got a nice treat on Thursday; getting to listen to a mix of "Out of Our Hands." The acoustic guitars I tracked last week really beefed (and pop-ed) up the choruses. I hope the guitar solo for this song kills people.

Literally...

Imagine spending your entire weekend designing & assembling a merch display.

That's what I did.

Although it should be very useful, this is one of those thankless, time-consuming efforts that you have to do to make 'playing rock 'n roll every night' work.

There's not really anything there that's not on the site, but it's in-your-face & QR crazy.

I'm still trying to figure out how to pipe in subliminal messages to get nearby folks to get out their wallets. :-)

Looking ahead...

Tonight's show at Nate's House on the West-Side is canceled. We're trying to reschedule it for a later date. Apologies to those of you that were ready for an early-week hellraiser!

On Wednesday night Drew & I'll be throwing it down unplugged-style for Lafayette Live at the Lafayette Theater (6th & Main St, downtown). The show runs from 7-11ish pm and I think we'll be in the middle somewhere. Lafayette Live at the Theater is a free all-ages event with a bar area for 21+.

The show on Saturday at Jerilee's has had a bit of a line-up shift. While Our Albatross and the IND crew are still good to go, Draekon has been swapped out with Colasi's Omen from up North. Josh (their bassist) and I did several shows together back in the Chemcoma/Driven period. I'm looking forward to catching up & rocking out!

Outside of shows, this is my heavy week for guitar lessons and I need to book some more shows for the group. Also, if things pan out, I should get to proof the mix of the final track for the Whistle When We Break Down EP tonight! WOOT!!

I'm SOOOO ready to get this puppy done & out.

Thanks for stopping by! It's busy-time.

I'll see you at the shows & back here next week!!

10/17/11

Hey all!

I was a tad reclusive last week since I had to finish up a new song with the quickness. Though I'm digging on it, it totally didn't turn out how I expected. My tunes usually take their own path, no matter what direction I steer them in...

Despite keeping myself mostly locked up, I was treated to a few awesome distractions throughout the week.

The Arch Drive Goodbye crew stopped over at IND HQ midweek for some hanging/scheming. They're still hip to letting me cover one of their tunes for the live set. I'm a bit behind schedule on making that a reality, but I should be able to knock it out quickly once the production phase of the new EP is completed. I really cannot wait to get all of that done & get it out there.

I was ecstatic to participate in Operation Freedom Foam on Friday. To summarize, my little brother is serving in Afghanistan with the USMC. After asking what it would take to get some sweet Dog N Suds root beer shipped over to him via their Facebook Page, the company started a campaign to raise funds to pull it off. So, an event was held on Friday at their location on SR 52 to load up palettes of root beer to be shipped off. The best part was getting to see my little bro's face & chat with him on Skype. While the day was an over-all success, I am semi-bummed that I didn't realize the Purdue Basketball team was helping load the van up, so I missed an opportunity to wish some good mojo on Robbie Hummel's knee. :-)

Saturday I got an offer to help out with sound for the People's Brewing Fall Bash 2011. Since I was a bit indecisive on how to spend my day, it was a no-brainer to go get some great beer & food while watching sick pickin' from Woodstove Flapjacks & Root Hog. To all involved: great job!

Switching gears...

Much appreciation to those of you that contributed to my Facebook Fan Page surpassing the 100 'likes' mark! I hope I see you cats out at the shows coming up!!

The first club date is coming up next Saturday (8/29) at the Jerilee's in Lafayette with Our Albatross & Draekon. This will be a very diverse show. Plus, it's a Halloween shindig! To get more details & RSVP, check out the Facebook Event. Please share!

That's gonna do it for this week's update. I have a long list of duties to complete before the next blog entry.

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great week!!

10/10/11

Wow, last week was great for getting the word out. The Fan Page & Blog activity picked up a lot. Thanks!

I'm guessing it's partly due to the new track leak. Since you had to like the Fan Page for a listen, feel free to leave feedback on the wall. For those who didn't create a fake Facebook page to 'like,' listen to the track, and immediately 'unlike,' I'm working on an extra incentive for you.

Since we're well into October now, that means shows are just around the corner. Although I have them posted on the Shows Page, I added them to the Fan Page for convenience. Please RSVP!

PS: if anyone has a solution for posting Facebook events to a Google Calendar or vice versa (without manual entry), please enlighten me!

I've been putting a lot of hours in finishing up a new tune to blast at the shows. I think if I ever have a masterpiece, this will be it: monster riffs, key changes, guitar & vocal harmonies, booty shakin' beats, and words inspired by my distorted interpretation of The Fountainhead. Look out, man!

Speaking of show prep, the crew & I really tried to get a teaser video at practice last week in time for Blog Day, but the tunes were way too loud & kept peaking the camera's mic. We'll have a couple more opportunities to try this week, so hang in there! :-)

Last week's Shaking Hands & Kissing Babies Campaign had me out a lot. Wednesday night was spent at Lafayette Live, the Harley Poe show at LBC, and at the Knickerbocker doing some extra celebration for my buddy Brad's b-day. Friday night I campfire-d-it with my bud Seth and Saturday night I helped run sound for the Eastern Standard Time/Mr. T-Bone show hosted by my pals in Green Room Rockers.

If you're out & about this week, I'll probably see you...

Before I wrap up, Thanks to all that voted for Artisan Electric, ISPhotographic, People's Brew, Sacred Apple, and Willow Stained Glass in JConline.com's Reader's Choice Poll. Yeah, I'm partial, but outside of those businesses being IND Sponsors, they're great at what they do & run by super cool people. I hope they win!

Now, without further delay, it's time for me to get down to other biz.

Thanks for stopping by!

10/03/11

Hey all!

Last week was filled with a lot of (what I'd like to call) 'administrative work.'

I booked some new shows for the group, did some studio work, and we practiced.

Basically, it turned out to be a week of lots of work that would be hard to talk about...

So, I'm doing something a bit uncharacteristic and leaking a track from the new EP as a thanks to those of you that stop by the blog every week.

But, hang on a sec...

This is a great time to thank my local sponsors Artisan Electric, DropYa Fightwear, ISPhotographic, Lafayette Speaker Repair, People's Brewing Company, Rhodes Amplification, Sacred Apple, Sound Logic Recording, and Willow Stained Glass.

I'm very honored to have these great *Indiana* small businesses in my corner. Please check them out!

Alright, commercial over.

If you head over to my Fan Page on Facebook, you'll notice the new track: "Guilt that Keeps on Giving."

The catch is: you will have to 'like' the page to be able to listen to it.

But... if you've been checking the blog every week, I'm guessing you've already done that. If not, perhaps this will serve as a reminder. :-)

Enjoy!

If you dig on the track, please share the link/catch with your friends. It would be pretty sweet if you told five people! The IND experiment relies on Facebook 'likes' and digital sales (on iTunes & Amazon) to stay afloat.

Plus, I really appreciate those $.99 votes of confidence! :-)

Also, if there's something you're not seeing on the blog that you think would be great for future entries, shoot me a message and let me know what you'd like to see more/less of.

Alrighty, it's time to get back to work. I have to make sure the new EP is finished & ready in time for the shows at the end of the month.

Have a good week!

Another whirlwind week is under my belt. Apologies for not getting this up earlier. Free sushi for lunch is extremely hard for this guy to turn down!

The 2012 Taste of Tippecanoe cycle has started & we had our first two meetings last Monday night. I'm pretty psyched about what the line-up is going to be. I'll give more info when everything is finalized...

In IND news:

The crew & I had another couple days of practice last week starting at 9am.  Nothing wakes me up like gallons of coffee and rock 'n roll!

Funny-ish story:

We were grilling steaks, chicken, & potatoes on the back porch after Thursday's practice when a call came in from Grant Mohrman (Mix Engineer for the 'Whistle When We Break Down' EP) wanting some guitar feedback for the track he was working on.

Luckily, the boys know their way around a grill & finished up lunch while I got everything in order to record.

Here's a clip featuring the sweet camera & space-bar work of Chris Parker & the killer feedback work of my Rhodes Amplification Dishaster 4790 guitar amp.

After editing the track a bit, I promptly emailed it to Method House Studios in Detroit.

Technology rules.

Outside of practice, I got a couple of opportunities to get out of the house to jam this week too.

Wednesday night I went down to Lafayette Live Open Mic at the Lafayette Theater to bust out some songs.

Here's the set:

"Pocket and Soul"
"Before it Gets to Me"
"Settling"
"Out of Our Hands"

Kudos to my buds in Arch Drive Goodbye and The Mound Builders for hanging out!

On Sunday I got to share the stage with DJ Powder, Snorb!, and The Clutter for the Home with Hope's benefit show at the Tippecanoe Co. Amphitheater. I had a blast hanging out with everyone and getting to play for a great cause!

Here's the set:

"Pocket and Soul"
"Before it Gets to Me"
"Settling"
"Out of Our Hands"
"Faithfully" - Journey cover
"Dear Reason"

Before last week, it had been a bit since I'd been out to play my tunes. So, I got busy adding some more shows to the calendar to keep the fun rolling. Though I'll chat about them more when the dates approach, I've added info to the Shows Page if you'd like to plan ahead.

That does it for it for the weekly update. As always, thanks again for stopping by!

09/19/11

Well, there's only so much a guy can do while waiting for the mixes & masters for his new EP to get back. I kept busy doing the normal routine; giving guitar lessons, finishing artwork, band practice, hanging out with my dogs, etc. One morning I was even lucky enough to go grab some breakfast with my old buddy Emmett Hall from the Malcontents.

But... as I'm typing this week's blog, I'm wondering if I was unconsciously trying to win an award for seeing the most live local bands/shows last week.

I'm thinking I was at least 'top 3' on that one. :-)

Like most Wednesday nights, I was down at Lafayette Live Open Mic at the Lafayette Theater last week. Though my intentions were to hang out with some music buddies & sign up for this week's show, I was talked into playing.

Here's the set:

"Hand of the Almighty" - John R. Butler cover
"3.14" - Bloodhound Gang cover
"Bed Intruder" - Auto-Tune the News cover

It was fun to have some folks singing along & to hear people laughing at the words. After I got done, my pals in Little Boxes churned out a great impromptu set. They're an earworm factory.

I headed back to the theater Thursday night to catch sets from Sleeping in Stereo, Future Lovers, and Traveling, Broke, and Out of Gas too.

Saturday night I split my time between helping with sound for the Why I Like Robins show at the Black Sparrow and hanging out at The Mound Builders CD release show with The Enders and Our Albatross at Jerilee's.

The coolest part about catching this all within a few days was the realization that:
A) Not one of these bands sounded like any of the others
B) They all killed it
and
C) Those 8 groups are only a small sample of the town's musical pie.

Kudos Lafayette!

Though I had a blast being a spectator, I'm ready to get out & play my own tunes this week! Hopefully, I'll see you at Lafayette Live or on Sunday at the Family Fun Day to Support the Home with Hope.

I promise to have the new IND shirts with me!

Thanks for stopping by again! Extra thanks to those of you who continue to share the Chris June IND word with your friends!! Referrals = awesome.

I'll either catch you at the shows or here next Monday. Have a great week!

09/12/11

Hey, it's Monday! I'm glad football is back, but watching it all day yesterday wrecked my schedule.

The tracks for my new EP, Whistle When We Break Down, have made it to Detroit for mixing and I'm cranking away on finishing the artwork. Here's the front cover:

After a few more days of tweaking, I should be able to declare the back cover done; allowing me to send everything off for duplication when the audio masters get back...

In addition to the two indie singles that I put out earlier this year, the band has been playing all three tracks from the EP and mixing in a few others. It's looking like we'll be in 'show' shape on schedule & I'll start adding dates to the calendar.

Speaking of shows...

As noted last week, my buddies in The Mound Builders just got their new CD back & are having their Release Show this Saturday (9/17) at Jerilee's in Lafayette. Local rockers The Enders & Our Albatross are on the bill for the show too. It's going to be a great time, for sure!

That does it for this week's *short* update. I have to get going on completing the weekly IND Agenda so that I can hit up tonight's show at Preston's, Lafayette Live on Wednesday, TMB's Release Show on Saturday, and attend Taste of Tippecanoe meetings on Sunday & next Monday.

See you next week!

Cheers to those of you enjoying your 'Labor Day' day off! Double cheers to you if you're still busting it today or know that you'll be doing at least 25% more for the rest of the week to make up for the vacation day!! Further, kudos to my great, hard-working Sponsors at Artisan Electric, DropYa Fightwear, ISPhotographic, Lafayette Speaker Repair, People's Brewing Co, Rhodes Amplification, Sacred Apple, Sound Logic, and Willow Stained Glass! Enjoy 9/5!

I managed to squeeze in a few breaks last week to get out; shaking hands & kissing babies. :-)

My good friend Alex from the Green Room Rockers has been putting on shows at Sgt. Preston's in Downtown Lafayette on Monday nights. Kyle Bledsoe (KB3) jammed last week with the Green Room Rockers doing an unplugged opening set. The show was great and I had a blast hanging out with Bitsy, Brady, 50, and the ADG crew. Here's the event page for tonight's show. It's hard to beat a free show with cheap drinks on a Monday night! Maybe I'll see you down there...

Speaking of my friend Brady... he's been running the Lafayette Live Open Mic shows at the Lafayette Theater on Wednesday nights and I made it down last week to remind some folks to get their press kits in for next year's Taste of Tippecanoe. Plus, I caught sets from Arch Drive Goodbye & Hillary Tribbett and was entertained by a few newbies too. Honestly, there is something in the water in Lafayette that makes for sweet musical talent.

While I'm on the topic of awesome local talent, The Mound Builders are doing their CD release show this month. If you dig mean, downtuned rock & roll, I hope to see you down at Jerilee's for this. To clarify, I'm not just plugging this because they were cool enough to include me in the 'Thanks Credits' on their CD! :-) They're good friends and a great band!

Now, it may seem that I spent my whole week being out & about, but the "Shaking Hands & Kissing Babies" routine probably took up 1% of my week. The Chris June IND lull is almost over and the hours that I've spent writing, recording, & editing are about to be shaped into a listenable product.

As mentioned last week, Grant Mohrman at Method House Studios will be mixing the new EP & tomorrow is D-Day for shipping the song sessions to Detroit to get the process started. I'm excited to hear what G-Wiz is going do to the tracks and can't wait to share it with everyone!

New tunes, videos, & shows are on the way! No promises, but I might have a teaser for everyone next week. Since it's not likely to happen by blog day, make sure you 'like' my Facebook Fan Page to get the low down.

If nothing else, I'll have the tracklist & artwork on display next time.

Thanks for stopping by again this week!

Before I forget, thanks to my Whiskey Run family for another great event!!

Welcome regulars & those of you that have recently 'liked' my Fan Page!

This week is going to be nuts! So, apologies if this seems a little brief.

Though a bit behind schedule, I still finished tracking vocals for the new CD ahead the forecast and I've got my Pro Tools rig set up on the bar in the kitchen doing my editing work. I'm getting close to being brain-dead, but I'm starting to see a little light at the end of the tunnel.

The new EP, Whistle When We Break Down, is being mixed by Grant Mohrman (Celldweller, Filter, Republica) at the Method House in Detroit. I'm pretty hyped about this. I've worked with Grant in the past & he's great at making my tunes go boom.

The plan is to have everything finished & shipped out to him by the end of the week. I should be able to give some audio/artwork teasers in September.

If you stopped by last week, you may be wondering how the session with Brandon 50/50 Reed went. Well, we couldn't get our schedules to line up, but it's going to happen eventually! Apologies for the bummer.

I did make it out to the Six Dollar Suit/Future Rock show at the Lafayette Theater last Thursday. Both acts tore it up! Musically, both groups have a drums/bass/synth approach with little or no vocals and, man, is it driving. I'm not a dancer, but I thought about it. :-)

Chris June IND drummer Chris Parker filled in for Six Dollar Suit's set & killed it!

Speaking of Chris, Drew & I will be linking up with him voltron-style for some intense jamming this week to continue getting the show ready. As stated in previous posts, Chris June IND will be gigging in mid/late October. Don't forget to send me referrals for cool clubs in your area, we'd love to come closer to you!

Did you see the Chris June IND story in the Journal & Courier last week? It's great to get the extra hook-up for my sponsors! Thanks again to Artisan Electric, DropYa Fightwear, Image Source Photographic, Lafayette Speaker Repair, People's Brewing Company, Rhodes Amplification, Sacred Apple, Sound Logic, & Willow Stained Glass for backing me up!!

That concludes the weekly update, I'm off to finish editing tracks. Thanks for stopping by!

08/22/11

Good morning! Have you washed your hands recently?

Since I planned on tracking vocals for the new CD last week, it would figure that I'd get sick. I guess I could have done a million takes; sounding like I had a clothespin on my nose, but I chose to put off tracking until this bug decides to clear up. Instead, I kept busy watching reruns of preseason football games, doing artwork, and scheming on other band stuff. :-)

I did get a bit of a vacation on Wednesday night when my good buddy Justin Reagin got me out of the studio to go to the Carnival of Madness show at the Murat in Indy. I spent some time talking shop with Emphatic in their dressing room, chatting with some of the Alter Bridge dudes backstage, and I witnessed Black Stone Cherry tear a hole in the sky. I had a blast at the show, but playing would've made it even more awesome!

Josh Hassett from O for 2 stopped by the studio over the weekend for a nice rock/recording chat. It's always great to see him! Our bands have been sharing stages since I was 16 and I've always admired his writing and guitar playing. Hopefully we'll catch up again soon!

I want to give my sponsor Artisan Electric some extra kudos for having an awesome week. It's pretty sweet for them to get a bump in the New York Times Blog and in the Lafayette Journal & Courier within 4 days. Keep up the good fight!

Looking forward, this week will be jam-packed. While finishing vocal tracks and artwork for the new CD, I'll be making time for guitar lessons, Lafayette Live, and IND biz (pushing Music Downloads, IND logo shirts, and 'Likes'). Additionally, I'll be keeping the band on track to be gigging in mid/late October. We still have a few more songs to learn before spending some time piecing the show together, but everything is going smoothly. It's going so smooth that I can start booking!

Out-of-town readers: I'd love to get some referrals on venues in your town. Please let me come to you! You can direct your tips through my Contact Page or Fan Page.

Also, if our schedules hold up, my old buddy Brandon 50/50 Reed (Insomniacs/50.6 Feet) is supposed to come collaborate on a new track this week too. That should be mega fun!

Thanks for stopping by!

It has been another productive week! Ready for the lowdown? Here we go!!

Thanks to Bitsy Matatall and Shea Hack at the WBAA Local Music Show for having me in the studio last week. We chatted about the past, present, & future of Chris June IND and had a lot of laughs. Also, I performed acoustic versions of "Out of Our Hands" and "Before it Gets to Me." These will be played on their Podcast along with "Settling," "Dear Reason," and the interview. If you 'like' the Chris June IND Fan Page on Facebook, you'll get the update when it goes live on their page.

Speaking of the Fan Page,  I've been getting some 'likes' from fans of Arch Drive Goodbye recently. I appreciate the referrals, dudes! I have been digging on their song "Autumn Reigns" quite a bit. Luckily, they had a few drinks one night & agreed to let me cover it. I'm sneaky like that. :-)

Moving on...

Rockerbox gave me the opportunity to open for them at their show at Traditions in Watseka, IL over the weekend. I played a mixed set of my new original tunes and some of my favorite songs by others. Here's the set:

"Pocket and Soul"

"Epiphany" (Staind)

"Before it Gets to Me"

"Long Day" (Matchbox 20)

"Settling"

"Out of Our Hands"

"Gone Away" (Cold)

"Faithfully" (Journey)

"Zzyzx Rd" (Stone Sour)

"Dear Reason"

I had a blast jamming, meeting the locals, and hanging out with Guy, Jon, & Devin from Rockerbox and Mary, the owner of Traditions. I'm anxious to do more shows with those dudes and I'm super super excited about taking my band to Watseka in the future!

I should also mention how psyched I was to get to rock one of my cool new DropYa Fightwear shirts at the show. Thanks Shawn!

In other 'shows' news, I'm on board to play the Family Day to Support the Home with Hope at the Tippecanoe Co. Amphitheater on September 25th. Home with Hope is an organization that provides a pathway to recovery for alcoholics and drug addicts. It's going to be awesome joining forces with The Clutter, Snorb!, DJ Powder, and others to support a great cause! I'll update the Shows Page as more info comes in...

This concludes the weekly update. Next Monday I'll have more scoop on the new IND CD and what the band is up to.

I'm off to Sacred Apple to get some more ink done by *my main man* Eddie.

Hey, I made it back! Apparently you did too. :-)

I think the wife did her best to run the juice out of me in Florida, but when I got home & saw the new Chris June IND logo shirts sitting at the front door, I whipped back into biz mode. If you need a new black t-shirt and/or want to support local biz, these are going for $15. The sizes range from Small to XL; with my logo on the front & my Sponsors on the back. Since these have been flying out of my hands, I can't guarantee availability in your size. Hit me up through Facebook or ChrisJuneIND.com to arrange a transaction.

I spent Saturday night hanging out with some buddies & sponsors at the birthday shindig of Artisan Electric owner Chris Voglund. It was a blast! I drank a lot of Peoples Brewing Co. beer & had some tasty grub from D&R Market. I took the Martin with me because I was told that some late night jamming may occur & ended up playing a short set between Mike Reeb & Snorb! I'm happy to be sandwiched in that lineup anytime. Those dudes flat-out rule! Check them out!!

Chris, Drew, & I had another loud, rockin' practice last night. Those dudes are as excited as I am to get this ball rolling. I may add an extra guitarist/instrumentalist to the crew if the schedules can flow. If not, no biggie. We're set to stomp as a 3-piece and I'll be booking from October-Armageddon starting soon!

Thanks for stopping by again! I'll be spending the rest of the week giving guitar lessons and polishing some tunes to play for my slot at the Rockerbox show at Traditions in Watseka, IL on Saturday. If you're up around that way, we'd love to see you out! Details are on the Shows Page and the Facebook Event.

This week’s blog is coming to you from Orlando. I’m on vacation, but I can’t ‘not work.’ So, if you’re a regular Monday reader, this one’s for you! :-)

Thanks to all that made it out to the show at the Knickerbocker on Friday night! Tim Brouk at the Journal & Courier did a nice write-up: http://www.jconline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2011107290306

The print version of the article had the headline of ‘June in July.’ Too funny!

It was great to show off some new material and whip out a couple of covers.

Here’s the set:
Out of our Hands
Dear Reason
Before it gets to me
Pocket & Soul
Settling
Faithfully  ( Journey Cover)
Bed Intruder  (Autotune the News cover)

I still have to sift through some footage of the set. If there are some gems, I’ll have them on my YouTube channel in a week or so.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to share the night with Colorphase and Sleeping in Stereo. Both are great bands populated with great people. Don’t be strangers!

Good news: Bassist Drew Luigs is joining Chris Parker and me for the live line-up of Chris June IND. Drew previously played with local rockers Painkiller Down and is known to pace around IND HQ playing Victor Wooten licks.  The 3 of us are going to do some cool things to my tunes & make them loud. I’m pretty lucky to be teaming up with these dudes!

Update: The Chris June IND logo shirts have been ordered! As mentioned last week, the shirts will have my logo on the front and my sponsors’ on the back. I anticipate having the shirts back before the next show (August 13th in Watseka, IL with Rockerbox). More details on this event are located on the Shows Page and/or the Facebook Event.

Also, the Sponsors Page is now live on the site!

This concludes the IND weekly update. Thanks for stopping by!

Over and out.
